Description An unusual rare and exquisitely carved Chinese “Chinoiserie” export armchair probably made in Canton in either rosewood or zitan wood, having the usual feature of a raked back. The pierced cresting rail with central cartouche in the Rococo taste with looped and pierced scrollwork. Two bows hold a pair of carp with mice bats and profusely carved fauna. On each side of the cresting rail are carved scrolls in the English style. The oval upholstered back is English/ European in concept and has a “drop in” upholstered back and seat and high armpads an English feature, newly upholstered using horsehair and covered in “Abraham Moon” blue wool by Master upholsterer Carol Arnell. This chair was made and the parts “flat packed” then assembled in the UK hence the plugs on the seat rails. The ball feet have four claws rather than three suggesting it was made for someone of high rank a Courtier, Official or English client. Original colour and patina in excellent condition.
