A fine George III period bracket clock, the ebonised case with a break arch top surmounted by a gilt brass carrying handle, over a glazed door with gilt brass fillets to the silvered 7” dial with Roman numerals and outer minute markers and plain black steel hands, inscribed to the centre S & C Joyce, with above a Strike Silent selector in a subsidiary dial and with decorative engraving either side, rectangular fish scale plates to the sides and a glazed back door to the rear, raised on gilt brass bracket feet, and with an eight day twin fusee repeating movement with an anchor escapement by John Thwaites striking the hours on a bell, and with a decorated backplate signed S & C Joyce, London. Supplied with keys and pendulum. Condition: Excellent, the clock is in very good condition with no damage or repairs, the case also is in good condition with no loss to the ebonising and the metalwork all present, the silks are replacements as is usual, the movement is in excellent working order and has been serviced and overhauled. Samuel and Conway Joyce were retailers operating in Lombard Street, London, and in common with several ‘clockmakers’ at the time (both in London and outside) they bought in movements from John Thwaites, who supplied excellent movements (usually repeaters with anchor escapements). Thwaites would eventually partner with George Jeremiah Reed to be known as Thwaites and Reed, a concern that, with several changes in ownership, continues to operate to this day.
